About the Unit:
Grade Level, Subject Area, and Context
This class is co-taught with Ms. Nancy’s 5th Grade American History course. Both of these courses are taught as a blended class, where you will spend two days a week in our ELA class and two days a week in Ms. Nancy’s American History course in addition to working collaboratively online.
In this course, students will draw upon the knowledge gained in their American History course to enrich their understanding of literature (poetry, drama, sequential art [often called “graphic novels”], and fiction). Standard conventions of ELA courses still apply to their literary analysis, following the Common Core State Standards for literature, reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
In this particular unit, we will be focusing on American History: The 1960s, as seen through literature. The literary element we will focus on is setting (both time and place) and its effect on character and theme.
-
The class will work together in person on literary analysis skills.
-
Students will work independently on book group reading and posting/responding to posts in a Discussion Forum.
-
The three book groups will work collaboratively on a Wiki for their book as well as a “Setting and Cultural Vocabulary” presentation (choosing a Prezi or a Virtual Field Trip); the Wiki and “Setting and Cultural Vocabulary” presentation will be posted online AND presented in person, in class, in week 8.
